Roses were a staple in older gardens. The most popular roses then were the hybrid tea roses. As beautiful as these roses are they require quite a bit of care. In the last 10-20 years plant breeders have been working with shrub roses in an attempt to give the customer a more trouble free and disease resistant rose.
Our inventory includes many of these shrub roses and a few tree roses. All our shrub roses are grown from their own root stock and this eliminates the potential for problems developing at the graft. Some of these roses have proven themselves very well with regards to being less troublesome, (not trouble free), while other have not done as well. One of those selections that has done very well in battling bacteria and fungus diseases is ‘Knockout’. Some of the 'Knockout' selections seem to fair better in Northern Michigan than others. The red and yellow blossoming selections have done well.
We have been experimenting with compost tea as a way to treat bacteria & fungus problems, including 'Blackspot'. It works! We are purchasing a brewer this spring so we will have control of each tea batch and the timing of the applications. This will move us one step closer to being completly organic.
Bailey Nurseries, a large wholesale nursery, has introduced a tree rose that does very well in our area.I have one planted at my home for 4 years and have had no problems with diseases. It flowers from June through October and unlike many of the previous tree roses it is hardy. It will sucker from the base but this is why they make pruners, (and clorax to clean your pruners before pruning).
