Four Season Nursery started as a design/build landscape business in 1996. The owner, Brian Zimmerman spent his very early years dusting shelves and digging plants at his grandfathers nursery, then spent 24 years working for his father's landscape business. In the mid-1980's he purchased 40 acres of farmland just west of Traverse City and this is where the current nursery is located. The nursery is part of the rolling farmland of Leelanau County, yet only a few minutes from downtown Traverse City.
Brian's vision was, and still is, to develop a nursery with more of a garden setting. The idea being that if you give people gardens to enjoy while they are shopping it will help them to visualize the potential of their gardens. Also, in wander through gardens you can see what plants work well together and see their mature sizes. This helps you in choosing the right plant for your garden. As our gardens develop we encourage you to just come visit and walk through them. We strive to not only bring you the basic plant material, but we are always looking for the plants that haven't made it into our northern gardens yet deserve a place there. We are developing a nursery section that will have an extensive selection of our native plants. We will start developing the inventory this season and will dedicate a portion of the nursery strictly to natives. The interest is there and we want to accommodate our customers needs. We are also starting a conifer garden. Brian recently became a member of the American Conifer Society. Seeing the wonderful collection of interesting evergreen plants that are not only unique but cold hardy really peaked his interest, and gave him an excuse to build another garden.. We are bringing in many unique Chamaecyparis (False Cypress), pines and spruce. We will still carry the usual varieties, but there are so many fascinating plants for the small garden that we just need to introduce them to you.
We take extreme pride in our gardens, our beautiful setting and the services we offer. If it is garden inspiration you need, come and visit us. |
